Winter Weather Policy

Home  /  Winter Weather Policy

Our Lady of Consolation follows all Diocese of Toledo policies when it comes to winter weather and cancellations. Shortly after his installation as bishop in 2014, Bishop Daniel E. Thomas enacted the following Snow Emergency Policy:

Whenever a county/city within the Diocese of Toledo is placed under a Level 3 Snow Emergency, during which all roadways are closed to non-emergency personnel,
the Catholic Churches within that geographic region will cancel the scheduled Saturday Vigil, Sunday, or Holy Day Masses.
Roman Catholics in that region, therefore, are dispensed from the obligation to attend Mass.
If Masses are cancelled, Catholics are encouraged to participate in Holy Mass via television, radio, or internet, making a spiritual Communion.
When Mass is cancelled, all other diocesan, parish, or school events in that geographic region are also cancelled.

The Basilica & National Shrine of Our Lady of Consolation is within the boundaries of Wyandot County. If the Sheriff of Wyandot County declares a Level 3 snow emergency, all Masses as well as parish, shrine, and school events are cancelled until the Level 3 is lifted. The Gift Shop will also be closed.

If the Level 3 occurs on a Sunday or a holyday of obligation, all Catholics living in the county under a Level 3 are dispensed from the obligation to attend Mass.

If public Masses are cancelled at Our Lady of Consolation due to a Level 3, the Friars will still celebrate Mass in the friary chapel for all the scheduled intentions.

If Wyandot County is on a Level 2 snow emergency, all Sunday Masses will be celebrated as scheduled. However, other shrine, parish, or school events will be cancelled.

Weekday Masses may be cancelled under a Level 2. Check the Our Lady of Consolation Facebook page for the most up-to-date information.
