In the year 1874, a woman was taken with a severe and extremely painful attack of rheumatic fever, which brought her near death's door and left her crippled.
Medicines and doctors seemed to do no good. She lived on for some years able to hobble about only on crutches.
Having read an account of the Pilgrimages to Carey, she was filled with confidence and promised Our Lady to make a pilgrimage and to have three Holy Masses read in Carey, if she would get well. She began to get better and finally could walk without crutches.
On July 2, 1878 she redeemed her vow, came to Carey and left her crutches at the Shrine, along with a statement of her case.
