Requiem for Mother & Child

Our Lady of Consolation is honored to host the world premiere of Requiem for Mother & Child by Carey native, Dr. Matthew Armstrong. This work is dedicated in memory of his mother, Dorothy, and his brother, Mike. Mike tragically lost his life in a canoeing accident at a very young age. This work for chorus and orchestra is a setting of the traditional texts from the Requiem Mass. The world premiere takes place in the Upper Basilica at 2:00pm on June 15, 2025. There is no cost to attend, but a freewill offering will be taken up.

A professional composer since 1992, Dr. Matthew Armstrong has written upwards of 200 musical compositions and has been the recipient of a Standard Award from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP). A native of Carey, Ohio, Armstrong earned the Bachelor of Music and Master of Arts in Education from Heidelberg College, and the Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Iowa. An active commission composer, conductor and clinician, Dr. Armstrong has performed on stages from Columbus to Des Moines to New York City, and his choral works have been interpreted by choirs around the globe. Retired from teaching, Armstrong has served on the Board of Directors of Adopt America Network, a national charity based in Toledo that works to place foster children with ‘forever families.’ However, his most important role is that of single dad to his adopted sons, Garry and Bradley.
