13 Tuesdays of Prayer in Honor of Saint Anthony

Home  /  13 Tuesdays of Prayer in Honor of Saint Anthony

Background of the Devotion

Saint Anthony of Padua was a sought after preacher. People would travel thousands of miles to hear him preach. After his death on June 13, 1231, he was mourned greatly. He was buried on June 17 and people lined the streets to pay him honor and respect. His burial day was marked with many miracles: his biographer wrote, “the blind regained their sight, the deaf their hearing, and the lame the use of their limbs. Every grace and favor asked for in faith and confidence was granted.” They knew he was already a saint! The people began to observe Tuesdays as a day of honor for the saint.

This devotion begins on the first Tuesday following the date of Saint Anthony’s heavenly birthday of June 13. If June 13 falls on a Tuesday, the first day of the 13 Tuesdays is June 20.
